SPM QUESTIONS ( Year 2010 )

9. Diagram 9.1 shows a boy and his father sitting on two identical beach balls, A and B, respectively.Their weight are balanced by the buoyant force.

a. What is the meaning of weight?
~ Force of gravity acting on the object

b.(i) Using Diagram 9.1, compare the weight of the boy and his father, the volume of the
water displaced and the buoyant force acted on both of them.
~ The weight of the father is higher than the weight of the boy.
~ The volume of the water displaced by the father is bigger than the volume water
        displaced by the boy.
~ The buoyant force that acts on the father is greater than that on the boy.

(ii) State the relationship between the buoyant force and:

        (a) The volume of water displaced
~ When the volume of water increases, the buoyant force increases.

        (b) The weight of water displaced
~ When the weight of water displaced increases, the buoyant force increases.

(iii) Name the physics principle involved.
         ~ Archimedes' principle.

c. Diagram 9.2 shows what happens when a wooden block is held above the water surface
and the released into the water.
~ When the wooden block is submerged in water, the buoyant force is greater than its
       weight.
~ The buoyant force pushes the block upwards.
~ This occurs until the block reaches the surface when the weight of water displaced.

d. The State Forestry Department is going to organize a competition. As a team leader,
you are required to give some suggestions to design a raft which can accommodate 15
participants and be able to move quickly in water.
Using your knowledge of motion, forces and properties of materials, state and explain
the suggestions based on the following aspects:

    (i) The shape of the raft.
         ~ Stream line shape

(ii) The material used for the raft.
~ Material used is light like bamboo

(iii) The size of the raft.
         ~ The size is larger

(iv) The design of the raft
~ Tie the bamboo in layers.

EXERCISE

5.A safety line is marked on a boat to
ensure that the loads carried by the
boat do not exceed the limit of its
   capacity.

The total mass of the boat and loads in
the boat is 1740 kg.

(a) Find the maximum buoyant force
     experienced by the boat.

-The maximum buoyant force experienced by the
       boat is 17400 N.

(b) If two men of mass 60 kg and 70 kg
intend to travel in this boat, who is
more eligible to go in the boat?
     Explain your answer.

-The men with 60 kg is more eligible because the
the men with 60 kg is more mild and light than
men with 70 kg.Also the boat will not easily to
sink or wreck when the men with 60 kg is go to
       the boat.

6.The diagram shows a hydrometer.

(a) What is the use of a hydrometer ?

-The use of hydrometer is to measure the relative
        density of liquids.

(b) What is the purpose of having lead
shot at the bottom of the hydrometer?

-The purpose is to keeps the hydrometer upright.

(c) Explain why the hydrometer is
calibrated in such a way that the
readings of the scale is increasing
     downwards.

-The volume of liquid displaced decreases when
density of liquid increases. The height of hollow
        tube from surface increases.

THE APPLICATION OF ARCHIMEDES' PRINCIPLE

HYDROMETER:-

  • A hydrometer is an instrument to measure the relative density of liquids.
  • It consists of a tube with a bulb at one end. Lead shots are placed in the bulb to weigh it down and enable the hydrometer to float vertically in the liquid.
  • In a liquid of lesser density, a greater volume of liquid must be displaced for the buoyant force to equal to the weight of the hydrometer so it sinks lower.
  • Hydrometer floats higher in a liquid of higher density.
  • Volume of liquid displaced decreases when density of liquid increases.
  • The height of hollow tube from surfaces increases.
  • Upthrust force=weight of liquid displaced.
  • Density is measured in the unit of g cm-3.

SALEH'S COMMENT

BASED ON MY OBSERVATION...
I THINK THE READING OF WEIGHT SCALE CANNOT BE MEASURED CORRECTLY BECAUSE HE USED HIS HAND TO HOLD THE APPARATUS..

IN THE OTHER HAND,IN MY GROUP EXPERIMENT,THE READING OF WEIGHT SCALE CAN BE MEASURED CORRECTLY BECAUSE I USED THE RETORT STAND TO HOLD THE LOAD...

SINCERELY

ADLI'S COMMENT

BASED FROM MY OBSERVATION ON THE EXPERIMENT, I LACK UNDERSTANDING ON THE READING OF THE WEIGHT SCALE BECAUSE THE RANDOM ERROR PRESENTS. SO, IT MAKE ME CONFUSED.

IN CONCLUSION,THE EXPERIMENT THAT WE DID CAN DETERMINED CORRECTLY THE READING BACAUSE WE NOT USE FREE HAND...

LUQMAN'S COMMENT

BASED ON MY OBSERVATION,

THE WAY HE HANDLE THE EXPERIMENT IS WRONG.THIS IS BECAUSE HE USE THE WRONG WAY WITH USE HAND TO HANDLE THE WEIGHT SCALE.

THE CONCLUSION IS,IN MY EXPERIMENT,WE CAN USED DIFFERENT COLOUR SOLUTION BASED ON VIDEO TO GET DIFFERENT VALUE.

SINCERELY,
LUQMAN

AKMAL'S COMMENT

BASED ON MY OBSERVATION...

FROM EXPERIMENT THAT SHOWN IN VIDEO IS NOT SATISFIED THE READING CANNOT BE DETERMINED CORRECTLY.IT'S BECAUSE THE WAY HE HANDLED THE WEIGHT SCALE IS FREE HAND.RANDOM ERROR CAN OCCURS.....

IN CONCLUSION,EXPERIMENT THAT WE DID IS MORE SENSITIVITY BECAUSE WE USED THE CORRECTLY APPARATUS TO HOLD FOR EXAMPLE,RETORT STAND....

SINCERELY:-
